GbR is a biennial workshop organized by the 15th Technical Committee of IAPR, aimed at encouraging
research works in Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis within the graph theory framework. This
workshop series traditionally provides a forum for presenting and discussing research results and
applications in the intersection of pattern recognition, image analysis on one side and graph theory on
the other side. In addition, given the avenue of new structural/graphical models and structural criteria for
solving computer vision problems, GbR2017 organization encourages researchers in this more general
context to actively participate in the workshop. Furthermore, the application of graphs to pattern
recognition problems in other fields like computational topology, graphic recognition systems and
bioinformatics is also highly welcome at the workshop.

We are delighted to invite you to the 2nd Workshop on Graph-based Technologies and Applications (Graph-TA). After a very successful first edition, with more than thirty international attendees and many engaging presentations and posters, we are organizing a new edition. This edition will follow a similar format, with short presentations and poster sessions with a lot of discussions and networking.
Graph-TA, organized by DAMA-UPC (Data Management) group of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech, aims at encouraging researchers to present their current work and interact in an informal set up in order to foster collaboration with other colleagues. Thus, the workshop will provide a forum for presenting and discussing research results and applications in the domain of graphs from different communities, i.e. computer science researchers working in the fields of database and management technologies, pattern recognition, graph algorithms, etc., practitioners using graphs to model their field of application, researchers in mathematics and physical sciences, representing, for instance, the graph theory and complex systems fields, etc.
The scope of Graph-TA 2014 is very broad and includes, but it is not limited to, the following topics:
· Graph technologies and databases
· Transactionality, languages and algebras for graph management
· Graph matching
Use of graph technologies with other management technologies
· Graph based learning and clustering
· Social network analysis
· Complex networks
· Data mining with graphs
· Mathematics of graphs
· Benchmarking graph and RDF technologies
· RDF and graph reasoning
· Linked and Open Data
Applications of graph technologies and theory
Graph-TA2014 will be a one-day single-track workshop and will be held in Barcelona, 21.02.2014. The workshop will be very structured but informal at the same time. Thus, we expect to have three sessions, two in the morning and one after lunch. In each session we expect to have several brief presentations (less than 10 minutes), followed by poster sessions of the presentations, including other not orally presented posters, allowing all the participants to discuss, and give their thoughts and suggestions on the presented works.
We encourage all participants to prepare a title and abstract (~300 words) and send it to ddomings@ac.upc.edu before 10.01.2014. In the event of too many presentation proposals, we reserve the right to restrict them to one per research group attending, although we will allow the rest of contributions to be presented as a poster. On 20.01.2014 we will tell you whether your abstract becomes a presentation with poster or only a poster. After the workshop, all the presentations (both oral and poster) will be included in the Graph-TA web page if the authors authorize us to do so.
The registration fee to the workshop is 50€ (to be paid in cash at the venue, where we'll provide a proof of payment) and will cover the organization expenses, which include:
· Online access to the workshop presentations (upon author permission)
· Coffee breaks
· Lunch
Workshop venue

The competition is about the application of graph matching algorithms for solving the problem of finding a pattern structure in a graph database containing molecules, protein structures and interaction networks.
The contest organizers will provide the participants with the entiere original dataset neededt o perform the task.
During the experimental phase of the competition, the graphs, both target and pattern, contained in the dataset will have their nodes randomly permutated.
A competitor will propose a graph matching algorithm, either exact or inexact, to find a
pattern graph (subgraph) inside a target one. Since the solution can be either exact or approximate, each algorithm will be judged using three kinds of indices:
accuracy, time and memory requirements.
Arrangements are being made to publish the contest results and a selection of papers describing the participant algorithms on a special issue of an international journal.

The Third International Workshop on Querying Graph Structured Data
(GraphQ 2014)
March 28, 2014 - Athens, Greece
WORKSHOP INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES
====================================
Graph-based data models have recently gained much popularity as
powerful means for data representation in several database application
areas.
Notable examples of application domains where data is naturally
represented in graph-based form are knowledge bases, biological and
chemical databases, Web-scattered data, healthcare, personal
information management (PIM) and enterprise information management
(EIM) systems, social networks, just to mention a few. The largeness
and complexity of datasets in these domains make their querying a
really challenging task.
The overall goal of the GraphQ workshop is to bring people from
different fields together, exchange research ideas and results, and
encourage discussion about how to efficiently and effectively support
graph queries in different application domains. GraphQ seeks at
providing the opportunity for inspiration and cross-fertilization for
the many research groups working on graph-structured data, with a
particular focus on the querying issues.
The workshop will welcome innovative papers from academic and industrial
researchers in the fields of information retrieval, relational databases,
Semantic Web, pattern matching, biological databases, social networks,
human-computer interaction, and other related areas.

This special session is sponsored by the Technical Committee #15 of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR TC15)
This special session provides a forum for presenting and discussing research results and
applications at the intersection of pattern recognition, image analysis on one side and graph
theory on the other side. In addition, given the avenue of new structural/graphical models
and structural criteria (e.g. belief-propagation, specific graphs under the constellation approach,
graph-cuts, dominant sets) for solving computer-vision problems like segmentation,
clustering, stereo, matching, and object recognition, this special session encourages researchers
in this more general context to actively participate in the special session.
Furthermore, new trends in inexact graph matching such as approximate graph edit distance,
distance based pattern recognition, graph kernels are also highly encouraged. Finally, the
application of graphs to pattern recognition problems in other fields like computational
chemistry and bioinformatics is also an important topic within the scope of this special session.

TITLE & LECTURER
Dissimilarity-based Representation for Pattern Recognition
Prof. Robert Duin -- Delft University of Technology
http://rduin.nl/
CONTENTS
The course will cover the dissimilarity-based paradigm for pattern
recognition. It offers an alternative for the traditional feature based
approaches. Based on user defined dissimilarity measures between raw
object representations like images, time signals and spectra vector
representations are defined enabling the use of established tools for
dimension reduction and classification.
The dissimilarity representation allows the use of non-Euclidean and
asymmetric dissimilarity measures. It is thereby a powerful approach for
users to apply different ways to express their domain knowledge than by
features or by normalizing and sampling the objects to be recognized.
The lectures cover discussions of the principles, explanations of the
tools and presentations of some applications.
The course will be composed by theoretical as well practical lessons,
using Matlab and the PRTOOLS library (see www.prtools.org and

Call for Submissions
Special Issue of the
ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems
on ACTIVITY RECOGNITION FOR INTERACTION
Main submission deadline: August 30th, 2013
AIMS AND SCOPE
Automatic recognition of human activities has emerged as a key
area of research for intelligent interaction between humans,
computing systems and robots. One goal of activity recognition is
to provide information on users' behaviour and intentions that
allows computing systems to proactively assist users with their
tasks. Over the last 20 years, researchers have investigated a
large number of methods, techniques and sensors for automatic
recognition of activities and gestures. The success of activity
recognition has led to activity-aware applications and the
commercial launch of a variety of products in the entertainment
sector and wearable technology that measures and analyses human
activity.
Advances in activity recognition have opened up many new forms of
interaction most of which have barely been explored to date. This
special issue aims to help fill this gap by encouraging and
publishing "binocular articles" on interactive systems that include
activity recognition as part of a cycle of interaction between
users and computers.
The dimensions listed below indicate the range of work that is
relevant to the special issue. Each article will normally make a
significant scientific contribution along one or more of these
dimensions. In case of doubt about the relevance of your topic,

Scope
GbR is a biennial workshop organized by the 15th Technical Committee of IAPR, aimed at encouraging research works in Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis within the graph theory framework. This workshop series traditionally provides a forum for presenting and discussing research results and applications in the intersection of pattern recognition, image analysis on one side and graph theory on the other side. In addition, given the avenue of new structural/graphical models and structural criteria (e.g.belief-propagation, specific graphs under the constellation approach, graph kernels, graph-cuts, dominant sets) for solving computer vision problems,GbR2013 organization encourages researchers in this more general context to actively participate in the workshop. Furthermore, the applicationof graphs to pattern recognition problems in other fields like computational topology and bioinformatics is also highly welcome at the workshop.The scope of GbR2013 includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
Paper SubmissionGraph matching Graph transformations Graph based image segmentation Data mining with graphs Irregular (graph) pyramids Kernel methods for graphs Graph representation of shapes Belief-propagation methods Graph learning and clustering Graph-cuts methods Graph based learning Graphs in constellation models Graphs vs rigid structures Graphs in computational topology(quadtrees, pyramids) and bioinformatics
Papers must be formatted in the LNCS format. Paper submission instructions can be found at the workshop website.

Special Issue on “Higher Order Graphical Models in Computer Vision: Modelling, Inference & Learning”
To be published in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence
Recently, there has been an increasing interest in modelling image priors with higher-order models and global constraints. These models have the ability to encode significantly more sophisticated priors and structural dependencies among image pixels, compared to the traditional pairwise interactions. Examples of such models in computer vision include, second-order smoothness priors in stereo, priors on natural image statistics for de-noising, robust smoothness priors for object labelling, co-occurrence priors for object category segmentation, connectivity and bounding-box priors for segmentation.
Topics
This special issue invites original articles addressing the issues of modelling, inference, and learning in models with higher-order terms and global constraints. We also welcome survey and overview papers in these general areas. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Modelling
(a) Different forms of higher order potentials
(b) Grammar-based models
(c) Which image priors should be modelled?
Inference
(d) Extending the class of exactly solvable higher-order models
(e) Approximate inference in higher-order models
(f) Theoretical upper bound for the approximate solutions
Learning
(g) Learning with higher-order potentials and global constraints
(h) Piecewise or distributed or coarse-to-fine learning.

CALL FOR PAPERS
SIMBAD 2013
2nd International Workshop on Similarity-Based Pattern Analysis and Recognition
July 3-5, 2013
York, UK
MOTIVATIONS AND OBJECTIVES
Traditional pattern recognition techniques are intimately linked tothe notion of "feature space." Adopting this view, each object isdescribed in terms of a vector of numerical attributes and istherefore mapped to a point in a Euclidean (geometric) vector space so that the distances between the points reflect the observed(dis)similarities between the respective objects. This kind ofrepresentation is attractive because geometric spaces offer powerfulanalytical as well as computational tools that are simply notavailable in other representations. However, the geometric approachsuffers from a major intrinsic limitation, which concerns the representational power of vectorial, feature-based descriptions. Infact, there are numerous application domains where either it is notpossible to find satisfactory features or they are inefficient forlearning purposes.In the last few years, interest around purely similarity-based techniques has grown considerably. For example, within the supervised learning paradigm the well-established kernel-based methods shift the focus from the choice of an appropriate set of features to the choiceof a suitable kernel, which is related to object similarities. However, this shift of focus is only partial, as the classical interpretation of the notion of a kernel is that it provides an implicit transformation of the feature space rather than a purely similarity-based representation. Similarly, in the unsupervised domain, there has been an increasing interest around pairwise or even multiway algorithms, such as spectral and graph-theoretic clustering methods, which avoid the use of features altogether.By departing from vector-space representations one is confronted with the challenging problem of dealing with (dis)similarities that do not necessarily possess the Euclidean behavior or not even obey the requirements of a metric. The lack of such properties undermines thevery foundations of traditional pattern recognition theories and algorithms, and poses totally new theoretical/computational questions and challenges.The aim of this workshop, which follows the one held in Venice in 2011(http://www.dais.unive.it/~simbad/2011/), is to consolidate researchefforts in this area, and to provide an informal discussion forum forresearchers and practitioners interested in this important yet diverse subject. We aim at covering a wide range of problems and perspectives,from supervised to unsupervised learning, from generative to discriminative models, and from theoretical issues to real-worldapplications.Original, unpublished papers dealing with these issues are solicited.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Embedding and embeddability
- Graph spectra and spectral geometry
- Indefinite and structural kernels
- Game-theoretic models of pattern recognition
- Characterization of non-(geo)metric behavior
- Foundational issues
- Measures of (geo)metric violations
- Learning and combining similarities
- Multiple-instance learning
- Applications

20th International Symposium on Graph Drawing
September 19-21, 2012 - Redmond, Washington, USA
Graph Drawing is concerned with the visualization of graphs and networks.
It is motivated by those application domains where it is crucial to visually
analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application
domains include social sciences, Internet and Web computing, information
systems, computational biology, networking, VLSI circuit design, and
software engineering. Bridging the gap between theoretical advances and
system implementations is therefore a key factor of Graph Drawing.
The International Symposium on Graph Drawing is the main annual event in
this area. This year the conference celebrates its 20th anniversary. It
will take place on September 19-21, 2012, and will be hosted by Microsoft
Research in Redmond, Washington, USA. Researchers and practitioners working
on any aspect of graph drawing are invited to contribute papers and posters,
and participate in the graph drawing contest.
PAPERS
------
Submitted papers must describe original research of theoretical or practical
significance to graph drawing. This year, for the first time, the call for
papers is split into two distinct tracks. Each paper must be submitted in one
of the two tracks. Papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers
submitted to the other track.
Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects
----------------------------------------------
Design and experimentation of graph drawing algorithms, Geometric graph theory, Geometric computing, Planarity and topological graph theory, Optimization on graphs,...
Track 2: Visualization systems and interfaces
---------------------------------------------
Visualization of graphs and networks in application areas
(e.g., social sciences, biology, geography, software engineering, circuit
design, business intelligence), Software systems for graph visualization
Interfaces for interacting with graphs, Benchmarks and experimental analysis for graph visualization systems and user interfaces , Cognitive studies on graph drawing readability and user interaction

CALL FOR PAPERS [***Deadline extension: September 30, 2011***]
THEORETICAL COMPUTER SCIENCE
Special Issue on ``Theory and Applications of Graph Searching Problems''
Manuscripts are solicited for a special issue in the journal "Theoretical Computer Science" (TCS) on
"Theory and Applications of Graph Searching Problems". This special issue will be dedicated to
the 60th birthday of Lefteris M. Kirousis.
Graph searching is often referred to, in a more playful language, as a pursuit-evasion game. This is a kind of
game where one part is a set of evaders, that hide in a graph representing a network, and the other part is a
number pursuers, that move systematically in the graph. The game may vary significantly according to the
capabilities of the evaders and the pursuers. The objective of the game is to capture the evaders in an optimal
way, where the notion of optimality itself admits several interpretations. The area of Graph Searching has
become a very active research area in theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics, with impact
and applications in various domains.
Submissions should be made in PDF format using the standard TCS submission system

The 2011 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Workshop on
Graphs and Complex Object Matching (G-COM 2011)
22 - 27 August 2011,
Campus Scientifique de la Doua, Lyon, France
Applications such as digital libraries, mediation systems or architectures based on Web services produce huge amounts of data that lead to the generation of a large number of models that are to be stored and accessible by users (customers) by means of suitable query interfaces. These models which describe complex objects such as documents, business processes or ontologies related to specific areas of knowledge are usually represented by graphs. Most applications that handle such models use graph techniques such as the matching process to access data by exploring structural and semantic properties of these graphs.
Furthermore, the graph matching is one of the known hard problems in graph theory and optimization. Several algorithms and heuristics have been developed for exact and inexact matchings, embedding and packing of graphs on general graphs and/or graph classes.
The purpose of this workshop is to bring together different communities of academic and industrial researchers working on problems of matching of graph models. Discussions will be held on theoretical and applied aspects of these problems.

1st International Workshop on Similarity-Based Pattern Analysis and
Recognition
28-30 September, 2011
Venice, Italy
MOTIVATION:
By departing from vector-space representations one is confronted with the
challenging problem of dealing with (dis)similarities that do not necessarily possess
the Euclidean behavior or not even obey the requirements of a metric. The lack of the
Euclidean and/or metric properties undermines the very foundations of traditional pattern
recognition theories and algorithms, and poses totally new theoretical/computational
questions and challenges.
The aim of this workshop is to consolidate research efforts in this area, and to provide
an informal discussion forum for researchers and practitioners interested in this important yet diverse subject.
The discussion will revolve around two main themes, which basically correspond to the two
fundamental questions that arise when abandoning the realm of vectorial, feature-based
representations, namely:
* How can one obtain suitable similarity information from data representations that are more powerful than, or simply different from, the vectorial ?
* How can one use similarity information in order to perform learning and classification tasks?
We aim at covering a wide range of problems and perspectives, from supervised to unsupervised learning, from generative to discriminative models, and from theoretical issues to real-world practical applications.
Accordingly, topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
* Embedding and embeddability
* Graph spectra and spectral geometry
* Indefinite and structural kernels
* Game-theoretic models of pattern recognition
* Characterization of non-(geo)metric behaviour
* Foundational issues
* Measures of (geo)metric violations<
* Learning and combining similarities
* Multiple-instance learning
* Applications

"Kernel Methods for Structured Data" - ESANN'11 Special Session.
Bruges
(Belgium) from April 27-29, 2011
Paper submission deadline ext. to December, 1
Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the
research community in kernel functions for structured data (strings, trees,
relational data just to name a few examples) and particularly
in kernels for graphs. However, due to the typical very high
dimensionality of such data, finding the right trade-off between
expressiveness and computational complexity poses severe challenges.
This special session looks for original contributions to the topic (particular
emphasis on kernels for graphs), as well as significant applications of kernel methods to structured data.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Kernel algorithms for structured data
- Kernel functions for strings, trees, graphs and generally any non vectorial
data
- Efficient kernels or learning algorithms
- Significant applications of kernel methods to structured datasets

IWCIA'11 is the fourteenth of a series of international meetings oncombinatorial image analysis.
Image analysis is a scientific discipline providing theoretical foundations and methods for solving problems appearing in a wide range of areas, as diverse as medicine, robotics, defence, and security. As a rule, the processed data are discrete; therefore, the "discrete approach" to image analysis appears to be a natural one and has an increasing importance. It is based on studying combinatorial properties of the considered digital data sets. Combinatorial image analysis often features various advantages (in terms of efficiency and accuracy) over the more traditional approaches based on continuous models requiring numeric computation.

SIMILARITY-BASED PATTERN RECOGNITION: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS
Saturday, August 21, 2010
Cesme, Izmir, Turkey
Traditional pattern recognition techniques are centered around the notion of feature. According to this view, the objects to be classified are represented in terms of properties that are intrinsic to the object itself. Hence, a typical pattern recognition system makes its decisions by simply looking at one or more feature vectors provided as input. The strength of this approach is that it can leverage a wide range of mathematical tools ranging from statistics, to geometry, to optimization. However, in many real-world applications a feasible feature-based description of objects might be difficult to obtain or inefficient for learning purposes. In these cases, it is often possible to obtain a measure of the (dis)similarity of the objects to be classified, and in some applications the use of dissimilarities (rather than features) makes the problem more viable. In the last few years, researchers in pattern recognition and machine learning are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of similarity information per se. Indeed, by abandoning the realm of vectorial representations one is confronted with the challenging problem of dealing with (dis)similarities that do not necessarily obey the requirements of a metric. This undermines the very foundations of traditional pattern recognition theories and algorithms, and poses totally new theoretical and computational questions.
The SIMBAD consortium is planning to hold a half-day meeting on these topics within the S+SSPR Workshop on the morning of Saturday, 21 August 2010. The workshop aims to explore the spectrum of alternative approaches, methodologies and challenges in the area, rather than detailed techniques. Contributions can be of two kinds:a) position papers that aim to stimulate discussion of the philosophy of approach underpinning the field, b) individual technical contributions on a focused topic.
Prospective particpants should send a one-page abstract to Marcello Pelillo by 1st June 2010.

Mining and Learning with Graphs Workshop 2010 (MLG-2010)
Washington, DC, July, 24-25
This years Workshop on Mining and Learning with Graphs will be held in conjunction with the 16th ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining that will take place in July 25-28, 2010 in Washington, DC.
There is a great deal of interest in analyzing data that is best represented as a graph. Examples include the WWW, social networks, biological networks, communication networks, and many others. The importance of being able to effectively mine and learn from such data is growing, as more and more structured and semi-structured data is becoming available. This is a problem across widely different fields such as economics, statistics, social science, physics and computer science, and is studied within a variety of sub-disciplines of machine learning and data mining including graph mining, kernel theory, statistical relational learning, etc.
The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers from a variety of these areas, and discuss commonality and differences in challenges faced, survey some of the different approaches, and provide a forum to present and learn about some of the most cutting edge research in this area.

In Pattern Recognition, statistical and structural methods have been traditionally considered as two rather separate worlds. However, many attempts at reducing the gap between these two approaches have beendone. The idea inspiring these attempts is that of preserving the advantages of an expressive structural representation (such as a graph),while using most of the powerful, vector-based algorithms from Statistical Pattern Recognition.
A possible approach to this issue has been recently suggested by GraphEmbedding. The latter is a methodology aimed at representing a whole graph (possibly with attributes attached to its nodes and edges) as apoint in a suitable vectorial space. Of course the relevant property isthat of preserving the similarity of the graphs: the more two graphs areconsidered similar, the closer the corresponding points in the space should be.
Graph embedding, in this sense, is a real bridge joining the two worlds:once the object at hand has been described in terms of graphs, and the latter represented in the vectorial space, all the problems of matching,learning and clustering can be performed using classical Statistical Pattern Recognition algorithms.
The proposed contest aims at evaluating the effectiveness of the embedding process in the contest of a classical Pattern Recognition application.

Computer Vision and Image Understanding Special Issue on Graph-Based Representations
http://www.dsi.unive.it/~gbr/SpecialIssue

**November 30, 2009**
Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Please submit through the Elsevier editorial system
Submission should conform to the standard guidelines of the Computer Vision and Image Understanding journal.
All submitted papers will be reviewed by at least three independent reviewers.
Graph-based representations are of pivotal importance in computer vision, pattern recognition and machine learning. They arise when the objects to be identified are decomposed into parts and relationships between them. Such representations are quite natural and find applications in low level image processing, such as segmentation or image filtering, and in high level vision tasks such as pattern matching. Graph representations also pose unique problems in machine learning, since they are non-vectorial in nature and require new methodology to be developed if they are to be learned from image data.
More generally, the strong and growing interest about graph based algorithms may be explained as follows: Todays pattern recognition tasks are less and less concerned with the analysis of a single image. Images are rather grouped in sequences (video) or in huge databases eventually disseminated over the Internet. This complex background for image analysis involves the use of many image features and the analysis of their relationships, which is typically a graph problem. Further, traditional feature-based approaches cannot satisfactorily deal with data that is naturally divided into part (e.g., shape or text analysis) or where contextual information is essential for the classification process. For these reasons the design of efficient graph-based algorithms for pattern recognition will certainly be one of the major challenge of the next decade.
The goal of this special issue is to solicit and publish high-quality papers that provide a clear picture of the state of the art of the use of graphs as a representational tool in computer vision and pattern recognition. We aim to appeal to researchers in computer vision who are making non-trivial use of graph algorithms and their underlying theory, and also to interest theoretical computer scientists in the graph problems that arise in vision. Papers are solicited that address theoretical as well as practical issues related to the Special Issue s theme. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Graph matching;
- Graph-based image segmentation;
- Irregular (graph) pyramids;
- Graph representation of shapes;
- Graph based learning;
- Graph learning and clustering;
- Graphs vs rigid structures (quadtrees, pyramids);
- Graph transformations;
- Data mining with graphs;
- Graphs in constellation models;
- Graphs in computational chemistry and bioinformatics;

Image analysis is a scientific discipline providing theoretical foundations and methods for solving problems appearing in a range of areas as diverse as biology, medicine, physics, astronomy, geography, chemistry, robotics and industrial manufacturing. The workshop will focus on the analysis of digital images. Besides traditional approaches based on continuous models, which require numeric computation, and which always involve the problem of rounding and approximation, "combinatorial" approaches to image analysis (also named "discrete" or "digital" approaches) have been developed during the last 50 years. These latter approaches are based on studying combinatorial properties of the digital data sets under consideration and generally provide useful algorithms for image analysis which are more efficient and accurate than those based on continuous models. Some recent combinatorial approaches aim at a self-contained digital topology or/and geometry (independent of Euclidean space), which might be of interest and importance, not only for image analysis but also for example, within mathematical physics, for the development of digital models of space-time.
The purpose of the 13th IWCIA is to bring together scientists working on mathematical and computational foundations of digital image analysis as well as on applications, for the interchange of ideas, the reporting of new results and the discussion of open problems.

Knowledge Discovery is an interdisciplinary area focusing upon methodologies for identifying valid, novel, potentially useful and meaningful patterns from data, often based on underlying large data sets. A major aspect of Knowledge Discovery is data mining, i.e. applying data analysis and discovery algorithms that produce a particular enumeration of patterns (or models) over the data. Knowledge Discovery also includes the evaluation of patterns and identification of which add to knowledge. This has proven to be a promising approach for enhancing the intelligence of software systems and services. The ongoing rapid growth of online data due to the Internet and the widespread use of large databases have created an important need for knowledge discovery methodologies. The challenge of extracting knowledge from data draws upon research in a large number of disciplines including statistics, databases, pattern recognition, machine learning, data visualization, optimization, and high performance computing, to deliver advanced business intelligence and web discovery solutions.
Information retrieval (IR) is concerned with gathering relevant information from unstructured and semantically fuzzy data in texts and other media, searching for information within documents and for metadata about documents, as well as searching relational databases and the Web. Automation of information retrieval enables the reduction of what has been called "information overload".Information retrieval can be combined with knowledge discovery to create software tools that empower users of decision support systems to better understand and use the knowledge underlying large data sets.
